Crews Join for Wisconsin Clinics
WORBA and the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists Host
August 1998
Both Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews joined forces in the Midwest this August to lead two Trail Care Clinics. Mountain bikers and land managers learned the "basics and beyond" of trail design theory, construction, and maintenance. Jan and Mike Riter (TCC#1) and Holly Hill and Ric Balfour (TCC#2) presented classroom material and directed hands-on trail work in this interactive seminar. The first clinic, a one day seminar held August 16th in Whitewater, Wisconsin, included a trail evaluation at the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest. More than 20 participants from the Wisconsin Off Road Bicycle Association (WORBA), Trail Users Rights Foundation (TURF), and the local region came away with strong fundamental skills in designing and maintaining trails.
On August 29th and 30th in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, the Trail Care Crews led a full two-day seminar which culminated in the construction of a new singletrack trail in the Black River Falls State Forest. Mountain bikers from Iowa, Kansas City, Colorado, Wisconsin and Illinois took part in this dynamic weekend event. Mike Harelson of the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources commented, "It was really great to work with a group that is so passionate about what they do."
Topics included managing water flow on trails, the benefits of contour design versus fall-line construction, an evaluation of erosion control devices such as grade dips, and the construction of switchbacks and bridges. Also covered: working with land managers, understanding user group characteristics when designing a trail, and motivating volunteers. Fun rides on some of Wisconsin's best trails ended each day.
WORBA and the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists hosted the schools.
