Developing management plans could affect trail access in Pennsylvania, Vermont and New Hampshire! The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is seeking comments on their state forest management plan, which encompasses 2.1 million acres of state forest land (www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/sfrmp/index.htm). In New Hampshire, the White Mountain National Forest will release a draft trail use plan late in the fall. Based on recent trends, the plan may propose significant restrictions to mountain biking. To learn the latest, check White Mountains NEMBA's website, www.wm.nemba.org. In Vermont, cyclists are invited to attend a series of public meetings to voice their opposition to continuing restrictions on biking in the Green Mountain National Forest. Meeting schedules are posted at www.fs.fed.us/r9/gmfl/nepa_planning/plan_revision/gmnf_meeting_schedule.pdf.
The dream of building mountain bike trails on New York's Staten Island continues despite a pessimistic editorial in the Staten Island Advance claiming that such trails will increase the "goon factor" and attract ATVs. IMBA's executive director Tim Bluementhal and Staten Island advocate Matt LeBow recently met with senior New York City Parks officials about this project. In October NEMBA will hold a fall mountain bike festival outside Boston as the final fundraiser to purchase land and protect the popular "Vietnam" riding area. Find out more at www.nemba.org.
